Suor Angelica
Opera in one act
Music : Giacomo Puccini
Libretto : Giovacchino Forzano
Production by Yuri Alexandrov
Yuri Alexandrov’s work is distinguished by its original aesthetics, unique message, paradoxical and unexpected solutions. It is at the same time captivating and difficult to watch his thoughts develop in his production of Sister Angelica which is full of allegories and metaphors. Thus the main character who is a nun finds herself captured in a cage formed by the Roman cross. Monochromic set design makes the production strict and tragic. The history of the heroine lies in the past: audience witness only the final day of her life which doesn’t differ form her seven years in the nunnery. Only one thing distinguishes this day which is meeting her aunt duchess who encloistered her. She tells Angelica about her little son’s death. Author’s bright individuality is manifested in this production while portraying the image of wicked and cruel aunt duchess looking as a character from a Bosch’s canvas.
